…Geophagus
Appearance
Geophagus (Geophagus brasiliensis, also known as pearl cichlids) are small pearlescent fish, with a single dark spot on their side and dark eyes.
They can grow up to 25-30 cm long, and live between 10-15 years with good husbandry.
Water Conditions
Minimum Tank Size: 200 litres.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 21° c - 25° c
PH: mildly basic to mildly acidic - Between 6.6 - 7.3
Hardness: 80 - 340 ppm
Tank Specifics:
Geophagus like large tanks full of rocks, driftwood, and other hiding spots to help them feel more secure.
They require weekly water changes.
Feeding
Geophagus are omnivorous and require a varied diet to remain healthy. High-quality pellets or flakes aimed at cichlids are recommended, with variety added by live or frozen food like bloodworms or brine shrimp. They also benefit from vegetables like peas or spinich.
Compatibility
They are peaceful towards their own species, but can show aggression towards smaller fish or fish they view as invading their territory. They therefore pair well with similarly sized fish who can defend themselves, but who are themselves not aggressive, like silver dollars or oscars.
Breeding and Sexing
Cichlids are difficult to sex as they lack obvious physical differences. Females may be smaller, but it is not a reliable way to tell, and viewing breeding behaviour is the best indicator.
Once a pair has established, breeding is straightforward. When the pair is ready to spawn, they will lay eggs underneath a surface like rocks or inside a small cave.
